Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put images or text into Motorious which I own?
Yes. Examples would include photos taken by you and text written by you.
Can I put images or text into Motorious which I found on the internet?
Probably not. Copyright laws favor the author and explicit permission is almost always required from the author/owner (even if no claims or copyright statements are provided). Don't take text or images from:
  • Newsgroups, Usenet, etc.
  • Email lists
  • Forums, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Websites (including those which have archived an email list, newsgroup, etc.)
I wrote something and posted it to one of the places listed above. Can I also post it to Motorious?
Probably. If you're the author, then you own the copyright and you can do whatever you want with it. The exception would be if by posting you agreed to joint copyright ownership with e.g. the owner or administrator of the site, list, forum, etc.
Can I put images or text into Motorious which I copied from a shop manual or other book?
No.
The diagrams on Motorious are lame and some manuals have really nice illustrations. Can I scan them and post them?
No.
Can I put images or text into Motorious if they are licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-SA)?
Yes.
Can I put images or text into Motorious if they are licensed under Creative Commons Non-Commercial (CC BY-NC-SA)?
No. The CC BY-SA (used on Motorious) and CC BY-NC-SA licenses require derivative works (ie. the result of two combined works) to be licensed under the same license elements. So, you cannot, for example, combine an Attribution-ShareAlike license with an Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike.

Generally, no (because Wikipedia uses the GFDL license)
Can I put images or text into Motorious from Wikimedia Commons?
Maybe. Check the license on the specific image.
Why does Motorious allow content from motorious.org to be used commercially?
This is about sharing knowledge. It doesn't hurt Motorious if someone else makes money from us.
How can I make money by using Motorious' free content?
Turn it into a printed shop manual or CD-ROM, promote it, distribute it, compete with Chilton's, link back to motorious.org, etc. Send us a copy and a thank you check when you get rich.
What will happen if I post copyrighted text or images to Motorious?
It will be removed as soon as it is detected. If it was an accident, go back and get permission from the author(s) and repost it to Motorious.
